Optimizing Iron

One of the ever-present challenges to even the most experienced foundry-man is the selection of the best Inoculation combination of elements and practice to optimize and achieve the required cast metal structure and matrix.

While there are several permutations and combinations of various elements to achieve desired results in a single homogenous addition, Barium containing inoculants are amongst the most popular as, in combination with certain elements, they are generally suited both for the inoculation of gray and ductile iron.

The most popular inoculants today contain Al, BA, Ca, Sr and Zr.

  • MPMSTD, our Barium based inoculant, is known to improve graphite nucleation and reduce fading. Suitable for most applications, and specially for applications involving long holding periods, the combination of Calcium and Barium give most efficient chill control and minimum amounts of slag
  • MPMSr, our Strontium inoculant is highly recommended for gray iron casting as it is likely to result in minimum chill, especially in thin wall sections castings

Following are the detailed specifications of our various Inoculants:

Specification:
Si % Al % Ca % Ba % Sr % Zr %
MPMSTD 70 Min 1.8 - 2.3 0.8 - 1.2 1.2 - 1.8 - -
MPM Sr 70 Min 0.5 max 0.5 max - 0.6 - 1.5 -
MPMSrZr 70 Min 1.5 max 0.5 max - 0.6 - 1.5 1.5 - 2.5
Minaculant 71 - 75 1.5 max 0.6 - 1.2 - - -

Special inoculants containing Re, Bi, Zr and Mn are also available, for specialized applications, upon request.

Sizes offered: 0.1-0.7 mm, 0.2-0.7 mm, 0.6-3 mm, 1-4mm, 3-6 mm, 3-8 mm, 4-10 mm.

Advantages of our Inoculants:
  • Homogenous combination of Ba, Ca provides a reliable, reproducible, consistent source of inoculation elements
  • Reduce chill and promote graphite nucleation, Resists fading, allowing for the nuclei containing Ba to remain stable for longer periods of time therefore very suitable for large castings and for thick walled castings where holding and pouring times are high
  • Increases nucleation rates in both gray & ductile irons
  • Neutralizes harmful tramp elements
  • Form minimum amounts of slag
